Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is this
MOD?
A Modification of Quake 3 Arena dedicated to uniting and
prospering the Capture the Flag (CTF) community and beyond.
2. Is this another MOD that requires a huge download and seeks to
change the look, feel, and sounds of the original game?
No. We tried
to keep our changes minimal and stay true to CTF and Q3A. Our main modifications
are:
a) Added a grapple
b) Added 4 techs or runes - Strength,
Resistance, Regeneration, and Haste
c) Removed Regeneration and Haste as a
power up in support of b)
d) Allow Power-ups to respawn on regular
intervals
3. What about maps?
Our very 1st
release should include 4 maps, but shortly after we will release another 4 maps.
Some of the maps are based on successful, proven CTF maps from Quake 1 and Quake
2. The other maps are new and focus on quality design and fun game
play.
4. Why did you do this?
Most of our
MOD team felt that Q3A was a great game, but from a death match perspective. The
CTF portion of the game had many opportunities for improvement and so the
gauntlet was passed to the community.
5. What are
your impressions of other CTF MODS?
There are several different
flavors of CTF available for the community to play. However, we feel that CTF
has been around for a long time and best enjoyed under the traditional, pure
formula that was seen during Quake 1 and Quake 2. We believe that the best
format is taking the regular game engine and adding flags, grapple, runes/techs,
regularly spawning power-ups, and good maps.
We think we are better off making as little changes to the core game as
possible. This effort is not about bringing Quake 1 or Quake 2 back. This effort
is about making the best CTF game within Q3A.
To best understand the goal
of this MOD, think in these terms:
QWCTF was QuakeWorld with flags,
grapple, runes, and regularly spawning power-ups
Q2CTF was Quake 2 with
flags, grapple, techs, and regularly spawning power-ups
PureCTF is Q3A with
flags, grapple, runes/techs, and regularly spawning power-ups
6.Why did you put the grapple in the game? Q3CTF is a different
game - if you want a grapple, you should play CTF for Quake 1 or Quake
2.
We agree that Q3CTF is a different game. However, different doesn't
always mean better. Even good things can be made better. From our perspective,
most players were satisfied with Q3A DM but not CTF. Most CTF players like a
grapple and runes/techs because they are simple and fun - our MOD team is no
exception.
7.Why did you put techs or runes in the
game? Q3CTF is a different game - if you want techs, you should stick to QWCTF
and Q2CTF.
See #6.
8. I don't like your MOD
changes. Why should I use it on my server?
If you don't like our
changes, simply change the default values to create a server that best suits
your requirements. You can use our MOD to play exactly like the Q3CTF release
"out of the box" or Q3DM. You can also benefit from our wide selection of
quality maps and client and server administrative commands.
9. What are your credentials?
We are a group of players,
software programmers, map makers, modelers, and skinners. Some members of our
MOD team do this type of work for a living and others just for fun. Our biggest
strength is that we love to play Q3A and especially Capture the Flag. Most of us
have been playing since NQCTF and so we believe we have a good perspective and
appreciation for the requirements to make CTF fun.
10. I like your MOD. Thanks for taking steps to improve CTF game
play.
Thanks for playing. Spread the word.
