Start a server

To start a server is a little more complex than joining a game, but not very hard.

If you're going to start a server where you will play yourself, you start Elite Squad Arena as usual. You'll see the main menu:

Click 'Start a game'. You'll see the map selection screen:

Pick the map you want to run, and click next. You'll see the server options menu:

Here you can type the different settings of your server, here's a quick guide to each of the settings:

  • Score limit: When a team gets so many points, they win the match.
  • Time limit: If you have a time limit, the team with the most points win the match when the time is up.
  • Max clients: The number of players that are allowed to connect to your server, including yourself.
  • Friendly fire: If you turn this on, you can kill your team members too. We recommend having this turned off.
  • Balanced teams: If this is turned on, a player won't be allowed to join a team with more players than the other. Recommended setting: On.
  • Dedicated: Don't touch this, if you change it from 'No' to something else, you'll not be able to play on the server from your computer.
  • Hostname: The name of the server, for example 'My ESA server'
  • MOTD: Message of the day, this message will be displayed to the players when they connect to your server.
  • Game password: If you don't want anyone to connect to your server, set a password.
  • Rcon password: Remote Control password. Set this to something, and keep it secret. If you're playing on your server from another computer, you can change the settings of the server with Rcon.

After you've set these things, click 'Fight!' and play!

If you want to run a dedicated server, it's a little different.

Use this command line to start the server:

quake3 +set dedicated 2 +set fs_game esa +exec esaserver.cfg +set bot_enable 0

The +set dedicated 2 tells Quake 3 that it's a Internet server, and shows your server in the in-game server browser. If you want to run a dedicated server on a Local Area Network (LAN), you should type +set dedicated 1 instead.

+set game esa tells Quake 3 that it should load Elite Squad Arena instead of the regular Quake 3.

+exec esaserver.cfg tells Quake 3 to load the file esaserver.cfg. It's located in your esa folder, and you'll find the map cycle and much other things in that file. Open it with wordpad or some other text editor and change the values to your own.

+set bot_enable 0 tells Quake 3 not to load any bot files. Elite Squad Arena hasn't any bot support yet, and when Quake 3 searches for files that doesn't exist, it could crash.

When you've started the server, it could look like this:

If you have problems with running a server, please drop a note in our messageboard, located on pur website, http://www.planetquake.com/esa, so can we take a look at the problem.
