"WHAT THE END IS FOR" Single player map for Quake 2. by Riscchip (Carson Utz) cutz@bcn.net www.riscchip.com (not active yet) **VERSION** April 5, 1998 **FILES** risc1.bsp risc1.txt **PLAY INFO** Single Player: yes Deathmatch: no, if enough folks complain, maybe in another version. Cooperative: no. Skill Settings: yes **INSTALLING** 1) Create a new folder in your quake2/baseq2 directory called "maps." (unless you already have such a folder) 2) Extract risc1.bsp to the "maps" folder, or just drag and drop it there. 3) Run quake 2 with the following command line: quake2.exe +map risc1 That will load "What the End is For." Alternately, you can start Quake 2 as usual and bring down the console with the tilde (~) key and type "map risc1." You can choose your skill setting by typing "skill x" where x=the desired skill setting and then typing "map risc1." **THE MISSION** Just to place things in context, if you're interested, this is the story I had in mind: This mission places you aboard a Strogg cargo ship which is being used by the Strogg warlord "Bor" to ship munitions out to his stronghold. Intelligence reports suggest that Bor himself is along for the ride this shipment, and your mission is to kill him off and to prevent his cargo from reaching its destination. As usual, you'll be hopelessly out-gunned and they're sending you in with just a blaster. ;-) Tough break. It's a good thing Stroggs leave weapons and health lying around. Good luck, marine. **BUILD INFO** ...people seem to love knowing this stuff, so here it is: BUILD TIME: Maybe 40 hours or so (over several weeks, of course) BUILD MACHINE: Dell Dimension XPS D300 w/a PII 333 upgrade, 384 RAM, Riva 128 AGP UTILITIES: QERadiant, which I really like. "Look mom! No bugs!" Please report bugs to me at: cutz@bcn.net. I'll try to correct any that turn up and release another version of the map--probably at my websight (which is _not_ up yet--and may never go up if I don't get some free time): www.riscchip.com My beta testers and I did thorough testing, but we can't catch everything. I'm sure something stupid will turn up. **NOTES** First off, thank you very much for downloading my map and giving it a play. Well, this is my first Quake 2 map (though I've been doing the 3D editing/design thing for a long time) and it's given me a good feel for Quake 2 editing, as it differs from Quake editing, etc., etc. If you like it, send me an email. If you hate it, use the "delete" key. ;-) In either case, thanx for giving it a go. I spent a lot of time ironing out the skill settings. There is nothing worse than a frustrating map--and nothing worse than a map that gives itself up to easy. Do me a favor and don't cheat: that's why we have the "easy" skill setting, which you should be able to manage. You still have to think fast and such to get out of traps, but the ammo + health is plenty. The "medium" or "normal" skill is good fun, and I'm not into getting this big head about playing the "hard" skill. Play whatever skill suits you. I think the hard setting is a good challenge, but not impossible: I can beat it without using secret items or super powerups. I have hopes for putting together a map pack--a mini unit, or something. I may or may not release maps individually depending. This map will probably end up as one of the maps. This will all depend on free time, of course. If you want to know how to find the secrets, I'll be posting a list of them at my websight (if that ever goes up, hehe). Some are easy enough, some are tricky. I like that in a map, myself: it gives the map replay value and some added mystery. BTW--my beta testers were like "WTF's the title mean??" It's the title of a poem by Jorie Graham about nuclear war. Makes a neat title for a map, I thought. :-) Doesn't really have anything to do with the level itself, though. **COPYRIGHT/PERMISSIONS** I don't wanna sound like some pompous bloke, but this is the standard schpiel: "WHAT THE END IS FOR" is Copyright (c) 1998 by Carson A. Utz Quake 2 is Copyright (c) 1997 by ID Software Inc. All rights reserved. The Quake 2 logo and likenesses are trademarks of ID Software Inc. All artwork including 3D models, textures, and skins is the exclusive propety of ID software. You may distribute this map on the internet, on a network or other electronic medium where it can be obtained for FREE, but only as long as it is distributed in the risc1.zip file ALONG WITH this .txt file (risc1.txt). You may NOT remove the .bsp file and distribute it alone--the map and this .txt must go together. In addition, this .txt file must remain unaltered when distributed. If you wanna put this on a magazine CD, great, but you must first obtain from me HANDWRITTEN permission. You may NOT use this map as a base for building other maps. You may NOT convert this .bsp file into a .map file or reverse engineer it in any way. It's NOT like I think everyone is going to try this crap, I'm just trying to cover my butt and include the standard warnings everyone else does. Cheers. **THANKS** ID SOFTWARE: But of course, for the coolest game in town. BETA TESTERS: Atom Splitter, Rick Neff, Sgt. Pects, and Maureen O'Se. Any good map editors who'd like to swap beta-testing duty with me on future maps, lemme know. I could use the help--which is not to say the abovementioned beta-testers didn't do a great job, they did. Special thanx to Rick Neff who's helped me out with a bunch of stuff, on top of being a beta tester. ROBERT A. DUFFY: For the world's greatest editor--QERadiant, and for answering my numerous and annoying questions. http://www.planetquake.com/qeradiant/ ALL THE CREW AT RUST: The most invaluable source of Q2 editing info on the net. http://www.planetquake.com/rust/ WOLFEN AT RAVAGES OF RADIANT: For answering QER questions--thanx a million. SPECIAL THANX: Rob "The Atom Splitter" Taylor--I wouldn't know where to find the power button on a computer without Rob. Thanx for all the help since before I can remember. **SHAMELESS ABUSE OF PLATFORM** If you're keen, support my buddy, independent film maker Hayes Davis: http://members.tripod.com/~hayesdavis/index.html --boy, these .txt files end up being too damn long no matter how short of wind you try to be. Later.
