I. Introduction:
Yes its the sacred script for the death match
"Holiness" designed to work with the Kinpin alpha demo
and later. Lets start with a little chat about Kingpin. This game
is not to be taken lightly by any means. The demo alone is filled
with breathtaking graphics and evironmental sounds that have been
blowing peoples minds. As much as I love Quake2 and fragging
online, I must face the facts that those days gone.
II. Installation:
This level works from a Pak file and therfore requires only that you unzip the entire archive to the Kingpin folder. The zip will create a folder called Holiness under your Kingpin directory. When you download maps from the internet that are similar to this one (ea. ones that operate from their own folder and use pak files) keep in mind that it is similar to how add-on packs work. A shortcut is required to access the subfolder and run Kingpin from it. I have created the shortcut for you and placed it in the zip file. It will extract to the Holiness folder. Right clicking this shortcut will give you the option of changing its properties, do this if your default drive is different than C
The shortcut reads like this C:\Kingpin\kingpin.exe +set game Holiness +map church The Set game command tells kingpin to work from the pak file in the Holiness folder.
III. Brief Study:
So you wanna know how I did this without any true editor right? Very meticulously and I hope you got some time on your hands especially if you expect to follow this. First things first, you need a Quake 2 level editor. A good one is qoole or QE4, next you need a texture converter like wally, third you need a pak editor like qwal or pakeditor.
Kingpin was based on quake 2's 3D engine and therefore works with the BSP map format. The editors mentioned above create BSP maps from you own expert (mmm yah right) CAD creations. They are true CAD map generators. In order to use them for Kingpin you must unpak the Kingpin pak file with one of the above pak editors and then export the entire pack to a temporary folder. Now you must convert all the images in this folder and its subfolders to the format Quake2 editors understand the .WAL format. Once this is done import this folder into the pak editor and save it as Pak0.pak you will then be able to use the new textures in the editors.
With qoole you have two options either work from this new pak file or import textures from the folder that contains the .wal files (using the latter method requires that whatever textures used from this folder are included in a Pak file.) Every machine is different as well as your hardrive structures, persistent experimentation is the only way to get this all to work. Thats pretty much it only those with the utmost patience and desire to create shall succeed.
