WARNING/DISCLAIMER: Some of these sounds can be pretty loud if played through headphones by a WAV player in Windows 95. I am not responsible if you bust out your eardrums or damage your hearing or sound equpment by listening to these sounds with your sound-card volume turned up too high. 1/7/98 ================================================================ Title : BFG Alternate sounds, revision 1 Filenames : bfg_hum.wav (new BFG hum) bfg__L1a.wav (new BFG missle sound) bfg__x1b.wav (new BFG explosion sound) tele1.wav (BONUS new teleporter sound) Game : Quake 2 Author : Drew Champion Email Address : drewbc@worldnet.att.net Web Address : n/a Description : Replacement sounds for BFG, plus bonus teleporter sound replacement. I thought the current BFG explosion sound was not menacing enough. So I wound up remixing three of the major BFG sounds, adding in a dash of the old Doom1 sounds in some cases (you should be able to tell once you hear them). bfg__hum.wav (new BFG hum) =========================== This is the sound the BFG makes when you are just holding it. I made the sound a little louder, so it sounds like you are carrying something powerful. I also tried to make the hum sound more "engine-like", since the BFG does look like a little engine. Other players will now be able to hear this hum coming from the players brandishing the BFG! I think this new characteristic may add some play-balance, since BFG shots and beams are now more difficult to avoid (it's almost impossible to dodge laser beams that are homed in on you from the BFG missle). bfg__L1a.wav (new BFG missle sound) =================================== This is the sound emitted by the BFG missle itself. It's not much different from the original Q2 BFG sound, just a little louder, so it sounds like a nuclear missle is roaring past you (or towards you). bfg__x1b.wav (new BFG explosion sound) ===================================== I took the old Doom BFG sound and mixed it with the new BFG sound, and voila!. It's hard to remake what is already perfect, but one can get damn close! tele1.wav (bonus teleporter sound) ===================================== I tried to mix a new sound that is more appropriate to represent billions of molecules being combined together in a nanosecond. Additional Credits to : Ashley Bone for the PakExplorer program. ================================================================ * Play Information * Single Player : Yes Cooperative : Yes Deathmatch : Yes Difficulty Settings : No New Sounds : Yes New Graphics : No New Music : No Demos Replaced : None * Construction * Base : Current Quake2 sounds and old Doom1 sounds Editor(s) used : Can't tell ya Known Bugs : - I couldn't get the sounds as loud as I would have liked to without causing even more static. - Also, the Q2 sound handling tends to diminish sound too quickly at a distance, in my opinion. The DLL code shows limitations to how much a particular sound's volume can be jacked up. Build Time : 12 hours. ================================================================ * Instructions * * IMPORTANT * You will need to run a pak-patch utility to copy these sounds into your Quake2 PAK0.PAK file. At this point in time (1/7/98) there is no other way I know of to use these new sounds. You should be able to find and download the PakExplorer program from any FTP site. Ashly Bone is the author of PakExplorer, which is what I used to modify my PAK0.PAK file. You may want to back-up the old sounds before replacing them. With PakExplorer, you should be able to copy and paste or drag'n'drop the files into a directory under your windows 95 explorer. In the PAK0.PAK file The bfg sounds can be found under sounds\weapons. The teleporter sound is found under sounds\misc. You don't need to necessarily use all the sounds provided. They will work independently. PakExplorer is safe and effective, and has never corrupted my Quake 2 PAK0.PAK file. Of course it doesn't hurt to back up this file just in case, if you have about 180mb of free space. Fortunately, the PAK0.PAK file will compress to about 91mb. To see if you want to use the sounds in the first place, just double-click on them from your Win95 explorer, hopefully you already have a built-in program to play *.wav files. If not, look for such a *.wav player on the net. WARNING/DISCLAIMER: Some of these sounds can be pretty loud if played through headphones by a WAV player in Windows 95.
