THE WARPS : WHY AND HOW ?
BUILD
So when the clipping is desactivated, you can go through a wall or a ceiling (if there are multiple floors), as if you had typed "DNCLIP". The goal ? To avoid being squished, because when the clipping is desactivated, Build puts you in a place where you aren't squished, if it is possible.
As a consequence, if you're squished, and if there's another sector above or underneath (if there is an overlaping floor, I mean), or if you run fast enough to go through a wall during the squish, then you arrive on another floor, or you go through the wall... But if you aren't arrived in another sector when the clipping is reactivated, you'll really be squished.
This is just a theory, but it surely works so... Anyway, if it doesn't, the result is almost the same : a great bug stops the game.
It only remains to know how to be squished, somewhere else than in a piston or a gearing...
There are two other ways to be squished : in a door, and in a special sector. The latter can be defined so :
- It must be higher than at least one of its adjacent sectors
- It must be next to a wall or a sector high enough to stop the player
- The sector must be rather thin
So, if you run into the wall which is high enough to stop you, you'll be squished. To run fast enough, there are several tricks to do : use the steroids, make a "crouched jump" (duck + jump) _ This is a very common trick _, and strafe + run forward. That's why you need to run forward, strafe and make a "crouched jump". It allows you to run fast enough to use a warp. It's important to do this trick well.
There is another kind of warp, which involves the same trick (but it doesn't require to be squished)... It allows you to go in a tiny passage, without being shrunk. If you see a door which isn't totally closed, try to go beyond by using the warp trick ! You can even stay in the lowered sector, even if it's too tiny, and you won't be squished. So in Toxic Dump (for example), you don't need a red key...
Once you've understood this, you can use the warps much more easily, and you can guess WHERE the warps are ! :)
Now, try to use the following warps (it's useful to master the "classical" tricks). Look attentively at the thin edges that you can see on the screen shots.
AN EASY WARP TO USE : THE BEDS IN HOTEL HELL
You see a hightened red sector, next to a wall. This sector is thin. So there's a warp here.
To use it, place yourself in the red sector (on the edge of the bed, I mean). Then crouch, aim at the wall, and creep toward the wall. Now jump while you're creeping toward the wall, and voila ! You don't need to strafe... If you use the steroids, you don't even need to jump ; you just have to crouch and creep toward the wall ! :-)
You failed ? Be sure that you're in the right place, exactly face to the wall. Then be sure that you jump while you're crouched and creeping toward the wall. You need to make several "crouched jumps" while you're creeping toward the wall.
This warp is nice to learn what is a warp ! (it could be surprising the first time ^^ especially if you haven't seen any demo before).
A CLASSICAL EXAMPLE : THE WARP OF THE JET, IN L.A. RUMBLE
Take a look at this picture :
In the red area, you can see a hightened and thin sector. There's a wall to the left, and a lower sector to the right. The red area is a very thin sector. So there's a warp.
There are two methods to use this warp : a quick method, and a more simple one (but less smooth and fun). Let's talk about this second method.
Go to the red area, and aim as shown on the screen shot (in fact, you should aim a bit more to the right). Crouch, then strafe toward the grey wall (and creep forward while you strafe). Try to stay in the red area, just by using the mouse (or turn if you use the keyboard). When you're ready (I mean, when you're crouched, strafing, and creeping forward), hit the "jump" key. One jump should suffice. If you do the trick well, you should go through the grey-blue wall and arrive to the top of the edge !
You failed ? You should train a bit ; this trick involves doing a lot of movments at the same time... It's very hard to do this if you use a keyboard. By the way some old keyboards don't allow you to hit a lot of keys at the same time ; so it's impossible to do the trick with such a keyboard.
If you succeeded in using this warp... congratulation ! Now you can try the second method, which involves being more synchronized. You'll need to jump in the red area, while you go forward and strafe toward the grey wall (so as to go diagonally toward this wall). Then when you land, hit "duck" + "jump" keys (hit "duck" first, so as to make a "crouched jump").
To check that you have understood how to use a warp, try to use this one from the opposite side, then from anywhere...
ANOTHER STYLE : THE WARP OF THE DOORS, IN HOLLY
There are two methods to be squished here.
The first method : Place yourself on the hinges of the door, then jump. While you're in the air, open the door and go diagonally toward the wall (strafe + go forward… from an angle of 135° from the wall.
If you go through the wall, it means that you go forward instead of going toward the wall. So you need to remain stuck on the wall during the trick. And be sure that you open the door while you're in the air, otherwise it won't work. If you're near the outside instead of being near the hinges, open the door a bit later, and aim a bit more toward the street.
Second method : crouch and aim 45° to the side, as shown on this screen shot :
While you're crouched, goin forward and strafing toward the wall, open the door and make several "crouched jumps" (duck + jump).
If it doesn't work, try to go backward instead of going forward. If you do so, you must aim more to the side. The goal is to be close by the hinges, to be hit by the door when it opens, and of course, to go rather fast toward the wall. Maybe you'll need to go forward, then turn and go backward. It could require a bit of training.
WITHOUT BEING SQUISHED : THE WARP NEAR THE LORRY, IN FAHRENHEIT
You can go under the panel, and you don't need to be squished ! You just have to do the same trick as the warp of the jet, in L.A. Rumble: jump (the great red peak), then crouch and make a "crouched jump" (the little red peak). By the way you need to go forward and strafe, so as to go toward the panel (but you have to aim parallel to the panel).
If you failed, try to redo the warp of Rumble, it's the same thing. Once you've jump, you must hit the panel just before landing, or land close by the panel (if you do so you have to make a perfect "crouched jump").
By using this trick, you can go in tiny passage, where you should be shrunk (for example, in Toxic Dump or the Abyss). In Movie Set, you can go under the panel which leads to the end, and you don't even need to jump ! Only a "crouched jump" + strafe + go forward suffice...
